For our guests who would like to fish for Lake Trout, you must use the mechanical portage at the north end of Clearwater Lake. This allows access to the northern lakes in our chain of lakes including Slender, Pipestone and Schistose Lakes.
These deep and cold waterbodies contain a healthy population of lakers in the 3 lb - 12 lb range.
Every year there are larger lake trout in the 30-32" range caught by our guests.
Pipestone Lake, the largest lake in our chain of eleven lakes is the most popular lake for lake trout fisherman. Pipestone offers the best opportunity for a great day of catching these deep water brutes.
The primary food source for the trout in our lakes is lake herring, also known as cisco. These forage fish can be found at their preferred temperature from 48 to 52 degrees farenheit, the lakers will be close by.
After ice-out, lake trout cruise the shoreline shallows and reefs in depths shallower than 20 feet. They will hang out at these depths until water temperatures start to rise later in the spring. Fish with dead ciscos, sucker meat or live minnows suspended beneath a float.
Hammered silver or five of diamond spoons, husky jerks and white bucktail jigs are also lures of choice. The best times are dusk and dawn.
Once the water warms above the mid 50 degrees range, the lake trout seek the cooler depths. Look for them in depths usually in the 40'-120' water column. Troll with downriggers, wire line, or dipsy divers, using crankbaits or flashy spoons.
Vertical jigging with spoons or 1-2 oz jigs and a white mister twister tail tipped with a minnow or cut bait is another popular summer fishing method.
In the fall, lake trout return to the shallows to spawn. Cast or troll near rocky reefs and shorelines using the same tackle as in the spring.
A medium action fishing rod and spinning reel spooled with plenty of 8-12 lb test line is a suitable choice throughout the seasons.
Lake Trout fishing season is open from Jan.1st to Sept. 30th.
Ontario's record Lake Trout was caught out of Lake Superior on May 25, 1952. It weighed 63.12 lbs, had a girth of 32.75" and was 51.5" long.
