Ontario's best fishing

Clearwater-Pipestone Chain of Lakes Lake Trout Fishing

Lake trout fisherman will be hard pressed to find better drive-to lake trout fishing than the waters of the Clearwater-Pipestone Chain of Lakes. Three lakes in our chain; Slender, Pipestone and Schistose Lakes offer excellent Ontario lake trout fishing. The only access to these lakes is by boat; via the mechanical portage at the north end of Clearwater Lake.

These oxygen-rich deep cold water bodies contain a strong population of lakers in the 3 lb - 8 lb range. Every year there are larger lake trout in the 10-20 pound range caught by guests of Little Moose Lodge. Without a doubt there are monster lake trout in the 30 pound range lurking within the depths of these lakes. A fish over 26 inches is considered an Ontario trophy lake trout. Lake trout grow slowly and live long in these cold Canadian Shield lakes, larger fish are 20-25 years old and some may reach the age of 40.

The primary food source for the trout in our lakes is the massive schools of lake herring, also known as ciscoes. These forage fish can be found at temperatures from 48 to 55 degrees Fahrenheit, the preferred temperature of lake trout. It's important to keep in mind that white, silver and blue colors are generally excellent color choices for your soft and hard plastic lures.

Pipestone Lake, with depths of over 200 feet, offers the best angling opportunities for those looking for an arm-wrenching battle with the hard-fighting deep water brutes. From Little Moose Lodge, it takes 30 minutes to reach Pipestone Lake, the largest lake in our chain of eleven lakes, and the most popular lake for lake trout fisherman.

What's the great thing about Pipestone Lake? Its home to Ontario's Big Five game fish: walleye, muskie, northern pike, lake trout and smallmouth bass! There are not many lakes that boast such a variety of species. So if the lake trout fishing is slow, there is no worry, simply choose one of the other 4 species to fish for!

Lake trout are one of the few freshwater fish that are able to release air from their swim bladders and, with care, can be successfully released after being brought up from deep water. They are slow growing fish and care should be taken to release all but the smaller "eaters" to preserve a healthy spawning population.

As a matter of fact, nearly 25% of Canada's lake trout population is found in Ontario, and even though this is true, only 1% of Ontario's lakes contain Lake Trout!

Ontario's record Lake Trout was caught out of Lake Superior on May 25, 1952. It weighed 63.12 lbs, had a girth of 32.75? and was 51.5? long.
