Clearwater-Pipestone Chain of Lakes Largemouth Bass Fishing
With the large variety of game fish available in the Clearwater-Pipestone Chain of Lakes, it's only fitting that largemouth bass are also present in this extraordinary lake system. Most guests come to Little Moose Lodge to fish for Ontario's Big Five game fish, walleye, muskie, northern pike, smallmouth bass and lake trout; spending a few hours fishing for old bucketmouth is an added bonus.
Largemouth bass average 1-3 pounds in our lakes, their population has been increasing each year, and so has their size. They are fairly scattered throughout the chain of lakes. Largemouth bass spend most of their time in water less than 15 feet deep; there are lots of shallow weedy bays in our lakes providing the perfect habitat and food source for largemouth.

Our best largemouth bass lake is Cedar Lake, this is one of the lakes that Little Moose Lodge has a boat and motor cache on; it is a short hike from Clearwater Lake. The bass relate to the cabbage weed and lily pads in this small lake that also hosts smallmouth bass and northern pike. When the bite is good, it's common to catch 15-30 bass in several hours.
Weld Lake is another good lake for largemouth bass; this is the first lake you enter when crossing over the mechanical rail portage at the north end of Clearwater Lake. There are several bays in this narrow lake that has stands of dead trees; these timbered flats are top feeding areas from spring to fall.
Largemouth bass are most active under dim conditions. On bright sunny days they feed at dawn and dusk, spending mid-day in shady areas or along drop-offs. Largemouth bass feed mostly on small fish, crayfish, frogs and insect larvae. Top water, spinner & buzz baits, jigs and Texas or Carolina rigged rubber worms will catch the majority of fish.

The largemouth's growth rate is much slower in the cooler Canadian Shield Lakes compared to the Southern States. It takes twice as long to reach sexual maturity; therefore our lakes largemouth population will gradually increase in numbers and size with good management. Little Moose Lodge asks all of our guests to practice catch and release, when fishing for largemouth bass.
